Recognize the problem

Signs a console is running too hot

Heat usually comes from dust packed into the heatsink and fan, or the thermal material between the chip and the heatsink wearing out, but cooling, fan or other hardware problems can look the same. Describe what you notice so the diagnostic can tell them apart.

Loud fans

The fan is much louder than it used to be, even in menus or lighter games. Note when it starts and whether it settles.

Shutting itself off

The console switches off during play. Tell us how long it runs first, whether it shows a warning, and whether it starts again normally.

Hot to the touch

The case, or the air from the vents, is hotter than it used to be. Tell us where the console sits and how much room it has around it.

If the console shuts down within minutes of starting, stop using it until it's assessed: left alone, the heat is what eventually kills the board.

Find the cause

Check the ventilation before booking

Where a console sits affects how hot it runs. These observations help us assess the fault without promising that cleaning alone will fix it.

  1. Give it room to breathe

Make sure nothing blocks the vents and the console isn't shut in a cabinet. If it runs cooler in the open, mention that when you book.

  2. Note when it shuts down

Tell us whether it shuts off in every game or only some, how long it runs first, and whether it starts again normally afterwards.

  3. Confirm the fault and quote

$50 repair diagnostics — credited toward your repair. Cooling, fan or other hardware problems can cause shutdowns; the diagnostic identifies the fault before the work is approved.

Plan the repair

Overheating service goes to the bench

Overheating work goes back to the bench rather than being completed at your door. In New Jersey, a visit can handle the handover; confirm the arrangements when you book.

You can also mail the console from anywhere in the US and track the repair by ticket number.

Console overheating repair questions

Good to know

How much does a console overheating service cost?

An overheating service is $79–$129, depending on the console; the tables above list each model. $50 repair diagnostics — credited toward your repair.

My console is loud and shuts itself off. What's wrong?

Usually heat: dust packed into the heatsink and fan, or the thermal material between the chip and the heatsink wearing out. Consoles don't all use the same material there, so the diagnostic confirms what the service involves on yours. Cooling, fan or other hardware problems can cause shutdowns too, and the diagnostic identifies the fault first.

Will cleaning the vents myself fix it?

Clearing the outside vents and giving the console room can help, but it doesn't reach the heatsink inside or the thermal material under it. Cleaning alone may not resolve it; an assessment identifies the fault and suitable repair.

Can it be done at my home?

Thermal work goes back to the bench because it needs a full teardown. In New Jersey, a visit can handle the handover. Confirm arrangements when booking, or use nationwide mail-in repair.

What warranty applies?

90-day warranty on repairs (physical and liquid damage excluded).
