Your files matter.
Pause before you try a fix.
A checklist for phones, tablets, computers, and drives when important photos or files are out of reach.
These steps help you prepare without diagnosing the fault. They cannot establish whether data is recoverable. If the device holds your only copy, tell us before approving any work.

01 / Preserve what you have
Pause changes to the affected device
Keep the device and any original drive enclosure or cable together. Arrange intake before shipping anything. Mail-in only. No storefront or walk-ins.
02 / Check another working device
Look for an existing copy
03 / Prepare your inquiry
Write down what you already know
You do not need to name the fault or reconnect a failing device for screenshots. Use these notes for a call or assessment request.
- Device make/model; drive capacity if known
- What happened; last time it worked
- Symptoms or exact error already seen
- Files or folders that matter most
- Copies found; files still missing
- Earlier resets, repairs, scans, or recovery attempts
Keep credentials private. Mention whether the device is encrypted and whether you have access credentials. Do not write passwords, passcodes, recovery keys, or private file contents here or in the public inquiry form.
04 / Discuss the next step
Ask about a recovery assessment
DeviceBytes is based in Madison, NJ, serving New Jersey. $100 diagnostic — credited toward recovery. The diagnostic is separate from the case-specific recovery quote.
Before approving recovery, ask what work is proposed, the total quote, any charges for partial or unsuccessful attempts, and how recovered files would be delivered. Recovery depends on the device and what happened.
