Game console questions
Good to know
My console turns on but there's no picture. Is that the HDMI port?
Usually, especially if the cable and TV are known good and the port looks bent or loose. It's a board-level repair — the old port comes off and a new one goes on — and it's one of the most common console jobs we do.
What causes stick drift, and is it worth fixing?
The potentiometer inside the stick module wears out; recalibrating masks it for a while but doesn't fix it. Replacing the module does, and it costs far less than a new controller.
My console is loud and shuts itself off. What's wrong?
Almost always heat — dust in the heatsink and thermal paste that's given up. A clean and repaste brings temperatures back down. Left alone, the heat is what eventually kills the board, so it's worth doing before it does.
Do console repairs happen on site or at the bench?
Controller work is quick enough to do on site. HDMI ports, disc drives and thermal work go back to the bench — they need soldering equipment and a full teardown — and you'll get a ticket number to track it.
Can you fix an older console — a 360, a PS3, a Wii?
Yes, and they're in the price list. Older hardware is often exactly what's worth repairing: the parts are cheap and there's no modern equivalent to replace it with.
