Console guide
Disc won't read or won't eject: is it the console's drive?
Checks for a PlayStation, Xbox or Wii disc that won't read or eject, how to tell a dirty disc from a failing drive, and which consoles have no drive at all.
A console that won’t read a disc may have a failing drive, but a scratched or dirty disc looks exactly the same from the sofa. So does a disc the console was never able to play. Rule those out first; they cost nothing, and the manufacturers’ own guides start in the same place.
Rule out the disc first
- Clean it properly. Microsoft’s method: hold the disc by its edges, then wipe from the centre outward with a soft, clean, slightly damp cloth. Use water only, never a solvent (Troubleshoot issues playing disc games on Xbox). Nintendo notes that a dirty disc can look damaged when it only needs cleaning (Wii: unable to read the disc).
- Try a different disc. This is the test that matters. Microsoft says that if other discs play on the same console, the drive isn’t the cause (same Microsoft page).
- Check the console can play it at all. Sony says a PS5 can’t play burned discs or audio CDs (How to troubleshoot disc issues on PS5 consoles). Nintendo says Wii game discs are region-coded, so one meant for another region won’t play, and that a Wii won’t play DVDs or Blu-ray discs (Wii: unable to read the disc). On an Xbox 360, Microsoft says the disc’s region code has to match the country the console was bought in (Xbox 360 disc drive errors).
- Check how the console sits. Microsoft says improper placement can lead to disc-related problems (Troubleshoot issues playing disc games on Xbox).
If one disc fails and every other disc plays, replace the disc, not the drive.
PlayStation 5: rebuild the database before blaming the drive
Sony’s PS5 steps, reinserting the disc after each one (How to troubleshoot disc issues on PS5 consoles):
- With the console standing vertically, insert the disc with its label facing left.
- Clean the disc with a soft, clean cloth and avoid leaving fingerprints on it.
- Try another game, Blu-ray or DVD.
- Start the console in Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
Sony’s next step after that is Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), and Sony warns that it deletes all information on the console. Don’t choose it unless your saves are backed up and you’re prepared to start the console from scratch. When its steps don’t fix the problem, Sony points you to its PlayStation Repairs service, which is worth checking if the console may still be under warranty.
Xbox: discs that won’t play
On an Xbox Series X or Xbox One, Microsoft’s disc checks come after its general game troubleshooting: clean the disc, check for scratches and nicks, then try a different disc. If a clean, undamaged disc fails and other discs play, the problem is the disc (Troubleshoot issues playing disc games on Xbox).
If no disc plays, or the console asks for a disc that’s already in it, Microsoft’s page for disc problems names two possible causes: a Sleep mode setting that leaves a small number of consoles unable to read discs, or a drive that needs servicing. Its free fix comes first. Under Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options, choose Shutdown (energy saving), then hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds to shut it down completely, turn it back on and try the disc again. Check the disc’s orientation too: Microsoft says the artwork faces the top of the console when it lies flat, or faces left when it stands vertically. Only when a disc still isn’t recognised after that does the drive become the suspect (Troubleshoot problems playing a disc).
On an Xbox 360, Microsoft adds two checks of its own: remove any USB flash drive attached to the console and try the disc again, and make sure the disc is an Xbox 360 game (the 360 plays some, but not all, original Xbox games). It also lists the CD formats and file types the 360 can read (Get help with Xbox 360 disc drive errors).
A disc that’s stuck inside
Don’t force a stuck disc out with a tool. Both Sony and Microsoft publish manual-eject steps, and both involve more than pressing a button:
- PS5: Sony’s manual eject means turning the console off, removing all cables, taking off the cover and turning a screw on the drive with a #1 Phillips screwdriver until the disc comes free. Sony says not to pull the disc out forcibly, and not to turn the console on with the cover off (How to eject a stuck disc from a PS5 console).
- Xbox 360: a tray stuck shut on a new console can be the clear plastic strip that holds it closed in shipping. Microsoft’s guide also shows a manual-eject hole for the 360 E and 360 S, and says a sticky disc or a label on it can stop the tray closing (Get help with Xbox 360 disc drive errors).
If you’re not comfortable opening the console, stop there and tell us a disc is stuck when you book. The console is looked at on the bench, and the quote is confirmed before any work starts.
Consoles with no disc drive
Some consoles have no drive to repair:
- Xbox Series S is all-digital. Microsoft says it has no disc support at all: disc-based games aren’t compatible with it (Xbox Series S).
- PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro play discs only through Sony’s separate Disc Drive, which attaches to the console. Sony lists it for the PS5 Pro and for the slim Digital Edition (the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups), and says the drive needs an internet connection to pair with the console when it’s first set up (Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles). The original Digital Edition (the CFI-1000 model group) isn’t on that list, so it can’t use the drive and has no way to play discs. If yours has Sony’s drive attached and it won’t read, tell us that when you book; the diagnostic establishes what’s wrong before anything is quoted.
On a Wii, Nintendo says a console that won’t read multiple discs needs replacing, and that it no longer offers service requests for the Wii (Wii disc read errors (multiple discs)).
Before you book
Tell us:
- the exact console and model;
- which discs fail, whether they play on another console, and what the screen says;
- whether a disc is stuck inside, and what happened before it stuck;
- for a PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro, whether Sony’s separate drive is attached;
- any earlier repair.
Disc drive work goes back to the bench. Diagnostics are $50, credited toward the repair, so the diagnostic confirms whether the drive is the fault before you approve anything. See console disc drive repair for every console’s price, or PlayStation repair and Xbox repair for everything else.
