Phone guide
Six signs your phone battery needs replacing
What a worn phone battery actually does — and how to tell it apart from a software problem that a new battery won't fix.
Phone batteries wear out on a schedule — most are noticeably tired somewhere between two and three years, sooner if the phone lives in a hot car. The failure is gradual, which is why people put up with it far longer than they need to.
Here’s what a worn cell actually does.
1. It dies in the afternoon, not the evening
Not “the battery is smaller than it was” — a specific cliff. You end the morning at 60% and you’re hunting for a charger by three.
2. It drops in chunks
40% to 15% while you’re looking at it. The battery can no longer report its own capacity accurately, so the phone’s estimate keeps correcting itself downwards.
3. It shuts off with charge left
The classic sign. The phone claims 30% and switches off anyway, usually while doing something demanding — camera, maps, a call outdoors in winter. A worn cell can’t hold voltage under load, and the phone would rather shut down than brown out.
4. It’s suddenly slow
Both iOS and Android throttle performance to avoid those shutdowns. If your phone got sluggish and the battery got bad at the same time, they’re the same problem, and a new battery fixes both.
5. Cold weather kills it instantly
Every battery is worse in the cold. A healthy one loses some runtime; a worn one falls off a cliff at the bus stop.
6. The screen or case is lifting
Stop here and get it looked at. A swelling battery pushes the display up from underneath — you’ll see a gap at the edge, or the phone rocks on a flat table. That’s a physically failing cell, and it should not be charged or left in a pocket.
What a new battery will not fix
Be honest with yourself about these, because a battery replacement is money spent on the wrong thing if the cause is:
- The phone gets hot doing nothing. That’s usually an app misbehaving or a charging fault, not the cell.
- It only charges at a certain angle, or needs the cable wiggled. That’s the charging port.
- Everything is slow, including from cold boot, with a healthy battery. That’s storage or software.
Checking before you spend
On iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Under 80% maximum capacity is the usual replacement threshold. On most Android phones the equivalent lives in Settings → Battery, or in the manufacturer’s diagnostics app.
If the number looks fine but the phone still behaves like this, book a diagnostic — it’s $50, credited toward the repair, and it beats paying to replace a part that wasn’t the problem. Live battery prices by model are on the phone repair page.
