Is a cracked phone screen worth repairing?
How to work out whether a screen repair is worth it on your phone, and the three cases where it usually isn't.
Short answer: usually yes, and the maths is simpler than it looks. A screen repair costs a fraction of a replacement handset, and a phone with a new screen is worth meaningfully more second-hand than one with a cracked one.
The useful question isn’t “is the screen broken” — it’s what else is going on with the phone.
When repairing is clearly worth it
- The phone works otherwise. Battery holds a charge, cameras focus, it doesn’t overheat. A screen is a part, and replacing it resets the thing you actually touch all day.
- You’re not due an upgrade. If you’d otherwise keep this phone another year or more, a screen repair buys that year cheaply.
- You’re planning to sell or trade it in. A cracked screen is the single biggest deduction on any trade-in quote — often more than the repair costs.
When it’s worth thinking twice
The glass is fine but the display is bleeding. Black blotches, coloured lines, or a screen that responds where you didn’t touch it mean the panel itself is damaged, not just the glass. That’s still repairable — it’s the same job — but don’t wait, because a failing digitiser can start entering things by itself, including in your banking app.
There’s a second fault. A cracked screen and a battery that dies by lunch and a charging port you have to hold at an angle is three repairs. Each one is reasonable alone; together they may add up to more than the phone is worth. Get all three quoted before deciding on any of them.
Water got in at the same time. Liquid damage is the one case where nobody can promise you an outcome. If the phone was dropped in water and then cracked, the screen is the least of it — start with a diagnostic.
What about the “it still works” argument?
A cracked screen that still works is not stable. Glass that’s already broken flexes, and that flex reaches the digitiser and the display cable underneath. The repair does not get cheaper by waiting, and a screen that’s merely cracked today can be a screen that’s cracked and dead in a month.
There’s also the boring reason: cracked glass cuts fingers. It’s a genuinely common way people find out their screen protector wasn’t one.
How to decide in five minutes
- Get the repair price for your exact model — ours are live, by model, on the phone repair page.
- Look up what your phone sells for working, and what it sells for cracked.
- If the gap between those two numbers is bigger than the repair, repair it.
If you’re not sure, book a diagnostic. It’s $50, credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and it happens at your door — you’ll get a real answer about whether this phone is worth putting money into before you commit to the full repair.
$50 repair diagnostics, credited toward your repair, and we come to you anywhere in New Jersey.
